Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
