Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
