Folly and Regal Arrogance Ruined Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

It all began with a isolated photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever taken of a royal family member.

There stood the Duke of York, arm-in-arm a young woman, while another individual beamed knowingly in the rear.

Absent that photograph, shot at a gathering in 2001, few would have credited the claims of a teenager who declared she was moved across the sea and compelled to have cursory intimate contact with a individual of the royal family?

A curious, revealing gesture by someone who had publicly claimed to have never heard of her, said he could not have had sex with her, and yet provided millions of his mother's funds to settle a drawn-out lawsuit.

A Long Period of Scandal

Against this backdrop, conversations of the royal family acting swiftly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the majority of 15 years since that picture, and another snapshot of Andrew strolling pleasantly with a convicted sex offender surfaced.

  • Self-importance: To what extent did his siblings, maybe even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
  • Questionable Associations: They must have known, if his staff and the authorities were fulfilling their roles, that he had some deeply disreputable friends given he unabashedly hosted them to estates.
  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his extravagance with taxpayer funds.

Travel were printed in royal annual reports: helicopter transfers from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "the frequent flyer".

World of Deference

Additionally the entitlement which expected subservience when he entered a area or the profound consciousness about his honorifics used on his correspondence in communication to his personal acquaintances.

He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who inexplicably spoiled him, was still living. The Queen did at least remove him of official roles and honorary colonelcies in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, deceptive media appearance six years ago.

Current Situation

It was only in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the publication of accounts giving more disturbing particulars of his conduct and that of his connections.

More information have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could escape lying about his relationship with a disgraced individual.

People (and the journalists) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was nobody of any consequence to support him, a consequence of all those years of arrogance.

Royal Worries

The more astute family members realized that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as heretofore at least intact and untarnished.

For generations the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of previous monarchs, proving they are useful, accountable and attentive to their people.

Andrew was putting all that in danger in an time when submission and discretion is no longer enough.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the notoriously indecisive monarch was prodded further. There was no other option. The institution had lost control of the account.

Presently the loss of titles and the ongoing and permanent personal shame that will afflict Andrew most deeply.

  • Reduction: Lowered to just a commoner
  • Prior Instance: The initial member to forfeit his honorifics in modern times
  • Armed Forces: Particularly painful given his service in the Falklands war

He continues to be a constitutional officer, theoretically able to act for the sovereign, and he is still eighth in line to the monarchy, but neither of these will actually occur.

What Lies Ahead

Do individuals he comes across still acknowledge him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Might they say Mr,

Naturally, he is not moving to an ordinary town, but to the sovereign's extensive property at a royal residence.

There, he will be furnished by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of financial support.

This is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a minimal payment for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit far, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Outstanding Concerns

The situation continues. There are still files in the custody of American legislators to be made public.

  • Political Pressure: Might lawmakers demand more
  • Fiscal Review: Or scrutinize the improper use of state resources
  • Legal Possibility: There may even be a police investigation into his conduct

Possibly for the present the reputational impact to the monarchy is contained. The statement from the royal household was evidently that the stripping of titles was what the monarch, and particularly other senior royals, sought.

Altered Approach

No more illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, notably, the brief announcement showed plainly that the institution were supporting the victim's narrative of occurrences.

Additionally, for the initial instance they ultimately showed concern for the victims: "The censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the reality that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

In the end it is arrogance, self-seeking and inactivity that will destroy the crown. In his stupidity, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew seems never to have learned that truth.
