Israeli citizens observe second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Future governance of the area
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until every captive come back none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do any agreement required for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk falls, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
