The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
