Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
