The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
