The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" category.
Extremely High Pollution Levels
Various sections of the capital registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the global health authority.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the city as colder weather sets in.
Yet in recent months, the recently formed local government approached the supreme court to propose a modification of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Court Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded contamination spiking around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
International Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.
Chronic Environmental Problem
Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.
