The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club history in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
