The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
