Venus Williams, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.

Recent Life Event

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
