What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
